Volunteering with KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now)

I define service as giving back and allowing myself to learn new things along the way.  Giving back has always been something that I like to do.  I feel empowered when I am able to help create change within my community. Service is a way to create positive change and mobilizes others to want to return an act an act of service.  Without giving back and creating positive change, there is no service. My time here in the LEAD Office has allowed me to focus on selfless service.  Selfless service is when I do things not for recognition, but because I care about what is happening around me.

It is not until reflecting that I realize how much of a key role it has played in my development as young adult.  I am continuing to learn the meaning of selfless service because I strive to be able to give back and volunteer without recognition or personal gain. I think of it as a learning opportunity to understand the needs of others around me as well as

There is so much to be learned when helping other people; I value being able to learn from and experience I would not necessarily find in my comfort zone.   I think of service as a personal responsibility that I must be committed to.

Service has been an integral part of the leadership consultant position because we strive to empower other students and our peers to be “the change they wish to see”.  This “change” we hope to spark in others, is an act of service I hope has a ripple effect on change is created on campus and eventually in our world.  Service is more than just going in to the community and helping with a project for a couple hours, it is when we can empower those to want to inspire even more people.
